Sangre the Cristo Wilderness:
From a distance, the lofty peaks of the Sangre de
Cristo Range resemble the razor sharp teeth of a
giant cross-cut saw. A closer examination reveals a
world of shimmering lakes, dense pine forests and
countless miles of trails ideal for horseback
exploration. Pack trips begin with hands-on
instruction
on saddling and care of your mount as gear is loaded
on packhorses. Emphasis on backcountry handling of
horses and natural history make these trips
educational as well as fun. Horseback trips include
your own personal steed, saddle, riding and saddling
instruction, low-impact camps, spacious tents for
two, sumptuous campfire cuisine, gallons of cowboy
coffee, layover days with side rides, trailhead
transport and knowledgeable guides. The 226,445
acre Sangre De Cristo Wilderness was designated as
part of the 1993 Colorado Wilderness Act. This long,
narrow wilderness starts at Blanco Peak and extends
north for approximately 70 miles. Elevations in the
wilderness range from 8,000 feet to 14,2904 feet at
the top of Crestone Peak. Several other fourteeners
are included in the area. The wilderness is
characterized by deep valleys, sparkling alpine
lakes and beautiful cirques.
Weminuche Wilderness
The Weminuche Wilderness Area is, without a doubt,
one of the most spectacular places on earth. It
contains some of the most rugged and majestic peaks
in the continental United States. The Weminuche
encompasses nearly 460,000 acres. The average
elevation is over 10,000 feet, with snowy peaks
topping 14,000 feet. Much of the area is above
timberline. The area is punctuated by clear mountain
lakes, swift cold streams, alpine meadows, high
stands of spruce, and large areas of bare rock and
rock slides. Temperatures in the Weminuche range
from 90°F to -30°F. Frost can occur at any time.
The Weminuche is rich with abundant wildlife and
good trout fishing. As a designated Wilderness
Area, motor vehicles, bicycles, snowmobiles, chain
saws, etc. are prohibited. Access is only on foot or
on horseback. What you are left with is an
experience that you will not forget. There are
over 240 miles of trails in the Weminuche. They will
provide you with access to this nature’s wonderland.
A trip into the Weminuche Wilderness Area is
one you won’t soon forget. Wildflowers begin to
paint nature’s canvas as soon as the snow melts, for
the growing season here is short. September finds
the Wilderness Area taking on another cloak of color
as leaves perform their magic for us all. This is
the beginning of Colorfest and one of the most
pleasant and spectacular months for riding and
hiking.
