Papoose Creek Lodge, Montana

Papoose Creek Lodge is an eco lodge in Southwest Montana's upper Madison River Valley, 40 minutes from one of our nation's jewels, Yellowstone National Park.
Set among spruce and aspen woods, the log lodge comprises five guestrooms along with three spacious pioneer-style cabins. Papoose Creek meanders through the property, and a restful outdoor hot tub area beckons at the end of the day. Imaginative cuisine and an inspiring setting combine to offer a five-star experience.
At Papoose Creek Lodge you'll be introduced to some of the world's best fly fishing on the Blue Ribbon waters of the Madison, Gallatin, Henry's Fork and Yellowstone Rivers. Hiking, horseback riding, canoe excursions and wildlife watching also acquaint you with this spectacular region in the Big Sky State.
Whether you ride the range with seasoned wranglers, take a canoe trip with a gourmet picnic, or simply listen to the rustle of aspens from the wrap-around deck, you'll come away with a deeper appreciation of the Rocky Mountain landscape and the importance of the wilderness as a precious resource.
Papoose Creek Lodge is a true gem in the wilderness..

The Riding

Horseback riding is an essential part of a Montana vacation. Montana is classic western horse country. We feel that partnering with a horse is a great way to explore vast areas of this varied terrain. Papoose Creek's horseback riding program offers excursions into open meadows, sage-covered foothills, virgin forests and mountain trails. Groups, under the direction of our Wrangler, Roger Young, are kept small in order to accommodate riders of various abilities and preferences. Not your standard nose to tail ride here; the 25,000 acre Sun Ranch is right out our back door, and we have exclusive access.
The Papoose Creek Lodge has a herd of fifteen Quarter horses, well-suited to the varied terrain of Montana. Most rides are on mountain trails, therefore we use western saddles and tack. We can adapt our rides to suit beginning to expert riders. Experienced riders can opt for a horse that will lope the range, while novices can be assured of a horse with a slower pace. Our wrangler carries out an evaluation of each rider's abilities, and provides instruction for those in need. The length of the trail ride is suited to the experience of our guests. Two-hour to full-day rides are available.
The weekly Dinner Ride conjures up the romance of the Wild West, as guests hop on board the chuck wagon pulled by horses to a picturesque creek on the ranch. The barbecue supper features steak and fresh fish grilled over an open fire.
The trail rides are as varied as the landscape. A two-hour guided trail ride over neighboring Sun Ranch takes in a glimpse of the 25,000 acres of Montana wilderness. Riders are quite likely to see herds of elk, perhaps a lone moose, coyotes, and deer, as well as a variety of raptors. A day excursion introduces riders to Red Canyon where the view from Skyline Ridge reaches to the awe-inspiring Grand Tetons. Multi-day pack trips can also be planned.
For a combined riding and fly-fishing experience, riders pack rod and reel on their saddle (or packhorse), and head for one of the pristine mountain streams or lakes in search of trout. Chef Jeff Miller packs an al- fresco lunch to satisfy hearty outdoor appetites.

Fly Fishing
Casting in the legendary rivers of Southwest Montana and the Yellowstone, made famous by movies such as "A River Runs Through It", is an experience not to be missed. Papoose Creek Lodge caters to the experienced and novice fly fisherman. Guests at Papoose Creek are privileged to fish the Blue Ribbon waters of the nearby Madison, the Gallatin, Henry's Fork, the Yellowstone and the Firehole Rivers. These rivers are all renowned for their excellent dry fly action. In addition, guests can enjoy lake fly fishing on nearby Cliff, Wade, Quake and Hebgen Lakes.
The pristine waters in this area support abundant populations of wild rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout. Our fishing program focuses on the quality of the total experience; excellent catching opportunities, beautiful scenery, and our professional guides who help guests enjoy great fishing as well as the area's fascinating flora, fauna and colorful history. Every month from May through September the fishing is at its best, and fisherman can expect dry weather and good water conditions throughout this season.
Papoose Creek prides itself on having some of the best guides in the west. They know the waters and the fishing, and they take great pride and pleasure in teaching you the skills to master it.

Bird Watching
