Sea Kayaking - Baja, Mexico
Sea Kayak Adventures
Baja's Desert Whales Sea Kayaking Tours

Magdalena Bay is a series of lagoons sheltered from the Pacific Ocean by low barrier islands and is the winter breeding grounds of the California Gray Whale. The whales travel 5,000 miles from their Arctic feeding grounds to mate and bear their young in these protected waters. You can experience the whales and their newly-born calves surfacing just a few feet away from a motorized skiff, and if you're lucky, reach out and caress this extraordinary mammal.
We offer three different itineraries for you to observe gray whales and discover Magdalena Bay's diverse, fascinating ecosystem of windswept sand dunes, vibrant desert flora and mangrove-lined estuaries. All three itineraries offer guaranteed whale sightings and only Sea Kayak Adventures has exclusive permission to explore Mag Bay's remote northern waters.
On our eight-day Baja's Desert Whales kayaking expedition, paddle your kayak six days along a narrow 35-mile stretch of peaceful lagoon waters past sea turtles, dolphins, mangroves teeming with colorful birds and sand dunes spilling into the sea. Along the way you'll trek whalebone-littered beaches, visit a sea lion colony, look for spouting grays and camp on sandy barrier islands. That sound after nightfall? Gray whales breathing.
Your naturalist guides paddle with you, pointing out wildlife and preparing all meals. A trip highlight is an afternoon of whale watching from a skiff for a close encounter with the California Gray Whale. The skiff takes you out to the deeper waters of the bay, where "friendlies" swim up and nudge the hulls.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Loreto airport. You'll be greeted by our ground service and transported to the hotel. Check into pre-assigned rooms (included in trip cost). Pre-trip meeting at the hotel later in evening.
Day 2:
After breakfast, we'll meet, board our van and ride to the launch site. We'll teach you the basics of paddling and thoroughly review safety procedures before loading kayaks with gear. Paddle a short distance to island camp and settle in.
Days 3-5:
Our days are filled with kayaking, watching wildlife, exploring the rich mangrove inlets, hiking along the sand dunes, and beachcombing the Pacific beaches. We generally paddle 4 hours per day (with breaks) and will have 3-4 different campsites during our six days of adventure.
Day 6:
Several motorized skiffs will meet us at camp for 2 hours of whale watching in Boca Soledad. An excellent opportunity to photograph Gray whales.
Day 7:
In the morning we'll break camp and paddle to the take-out site where we will have a final lunch before driving back to Loreto. After checking into the hotel, there is time to explore the town. This evening there is a no-host farewell dinner at a favorite restaurant.

Our ground service will provide transportation to the airport for your flight to Los Angeles and connecting flights homeward.
