Hellenistic, Roman and
Byzantine era. Here you will
visit a well-preserved
temple with mosaic floor

This is where the wild goats
of Crete (Kri-kri) live as
well as some of the most
rare and highly threatened
with extinction wild birds
of Europe, such as the
griffon vulture and the
lammergeier (Gypaetus
barbatus). Towards the peak
there are some points that
you may use your hands to
climb (easy scramble,
nothing technical). The
summit provides spectacular
views in all directions.
You descend by the same
route and you spend the
night at a family owned
hotel in Omalos plateau. (Overnight
in Omalos)
The walk: (6 hrs).
You will start from
“Xiloskalo” behind the
building on the right
hand-side as you face the
mountain and the Samaria
gorge. You will follow a
well-maintained trail (E4)
that gains rapidly height
with many zigzags. After the
first 30-40 min the path
flattens out and passes
under a rock arch and then
it reaches the Linoseli
spring (1 hr). Continue the
zigzag path till the
Linoseli Col and leave
behind the E4 path. Now you
will follow the red marks
that pass beside a big hole
– cave, you need to scramble
and to not loose the red
marks until the summit. You

way.

gorge. Samaria is the
largest gorge in Europe and

bottom of the “upper” gorge
about 1000m below the
starting point. You follow a
very well maintained path
till the exit of the gorge,
with many organized springs,
small wooden bridges and
some WCs. Half way to the

picturesque St Paul's
chapel, which was built on
the sand next to the sea.

you cannot miss it. St.

reach Marmara beach at about
4 hours from Agia Roumeli
and you need an extra 45 min
walk to cross Mouros
peninsula (the ancient
Phoinix) and arrive at
Loutro.
DAY 7: Ascend the
ancient path until Anopolis
village, a historic area
from where the revolution
against the Turks began in
1866. Here we see
"authentic" Cretans with
their traditional costumes
that “take us back in time,
to other centuries”. From
Agia Ekaterini’s church,
just over Anopolis, you have
the chance to enjoy the
wonderful view to the Libyan
Sea and the south coast of
Crete. Visit Anopoli’s
square, relax at the coffee
shop with the locals and
return the same way back.
For the strong hikers we
propose to continue and
cross Arathena’s gorge that
ends at “Marmara” beach and

big loop may give an
unforgettable picture that
alternates between mountain
trail, spectacular gorge and
coastal path.

door and out of Loutro. When
you reach the old building
on your right and the small
chapel on your left, follow
the left zigzag path that
climbs the steep slope till
Agia Ekaterini’s church. At
the first fork that you
meet, go right. Having
climbed the 2/3 of the slope
you meet a dirt road. Cross
the road and follow the path
that is visible in front of
you to rejoin the road.
Continue on the road and at
the cylindrical rocky water
cistern leave the road to
join again the rocky path.
Few minutes after the
cistern watch out to take
the left trail that
continues to climb the
slope. Some 15-20 minutes
you reach St. Kathryn’s
church with its wonderful
view. From the church you
follow the dirt road and the
asphalt road till the square
of Anopolis village with the
big status of Daskalogiannis.
To return take the same way
back.
DAY 8: For the last
day there are two optional
ways to reach the village of
Hora Sfakion, from where you
return back to Hania. Either
2 hours hike by taking the
coastal path that crosses
"Sweet water beach" (there
are many fresh water
springs, coming out of the
pebble beach), or a 15
minutes boat-ride from
Loutro to Sfakia. The trip
ends at Hania where you will
find really interesting a
small walk in Hania’s
market.
If you choose to hike to
Hora Sfakion, leave your
luggage to the owners of the
hotel to put them in the
boat and start the hike
early in order collect your
luggage from the boat at
Hora Sfakion.
The Walk (2 hrs):
Starting from the east side
of Loutro, you head up to
the left of “Kri-kri” tavern
initially on a concrete path
that leads you at the fence
door and out of Loutro. When
you reach the old building
on your right and the small
chapel on your left, follow
the right path (E4) that is
about 50 m. above the sea
level. The path is very
clear and at some areas may
have some steep drops
(narrow points). You pass
the "Sweet water beach" and
you climb up to join the
asphalt road. Turn right and
continue on the road till
Hora Sfakion.
