Sample Itinerary
We start in the late afternoon of Day One by driving guests and horses about two hours from the Clearwater Ranch, over the mountains, to the Clear Water River valley where the camp is located. If it's hot, we know a great place to get ice cream on the way!
The camp sits along the Cutoff Creek which flows into the Clearwater River. The campfire tent is on the right and the three sleeping tents to the left. Each has a platform bed with mattress, a Colman lantern, and a wood stove for those cold mountain mornings.
There is a corral and plenty of green grass pasture for the horses right next to the tents. The Mountain Camp experience brings you closer to the horse you're riding. Here we spend the first two nights.
Weather permitting the next morning we saddle the riding horses, load the wagon, hitch up the draft horses, and set out further into the Canadian Rockies. It takes about five hours with pack horses to get from the Mountain Camp to the Outpost Camp. The ride includes three big crossings of the Clearwater River. This is looking south toward a smaller river crossing that's between two larger ones.
The Outpost camp is situated by the Clearwater River on the edge of a cliff. Across from the river there are pastures and forest, plus plenty of mountains. It's a bit more rustic than the Mountain Camp, but the riding, scenery, and wildlife opportunities are even better.
The two horse corrals at the Outpost Camp are spacious with lots of room for the tack. The fire tent makes sitting around the campfire even more enjoyable.
Even though more rustic, the Outpost Camp is still comfortable. The custom made tents also have beds and a wood stove.
There are many great rides out of the Outpost Camp. Following are some pictures from rides to Lost Guide Lake and 40 Mile Ridge which gets its name because you can see 40 miles in all directions on a clear day.
For last night (or two) we return to the Mountain Camp for some relaxing rides and a (solar) shower and comfortable bed.
If you're willing to experience a little more adventure in your riding, the Outpost Camp is a must see and do experience - available only when weather permitting.
