An Overview on canoeing the lower Zambezi

For ease of reference the Lower Zambezi River can be divided into three main canoeing sections

  • The first is a 3 day leg of about 56km from Kariba to Chirundu on our Marula Safari. This takes you through a very scenic stretch in the Kariba Gorge. The game is not extensive - and with the exception of hippos and crocodiles the chances of seeing elephant, buffalo, cats etc. is slim. There is a very interesting historical aspect to this section with the discovery of the Ingombe Ilede archaeological site in 1960 - general literature is thin on the subject. Birdlife is very good with Black Eagle nests in the gorge. If you're short on time and keen to experience the Zambezi River then this is the best option. The overnight sites are on islands in the middle of the river.

  • The second is a 4 day leg of about 70km from Chirundu to Mana Pools: Tamarind
This is the most popular stretch on the lower Zambezi River. The game is superb especially in the dry season. Overnight stops are on both the mainland and on islands. The trip passes along the Urungwe Safari Area and goes into Mana Pools. This is where canoeists encounter the most game and birdlife on the entire Zambezi River from source to sea. Mana Pools is closed from November to April, and the only way to see the area out of season is via canoe. Arguably the best safari combination in Zimbabwe is to do a walking safari in Matusadona and the Chirundu - Mana Pools canoe safari over 6 nights.

  • The third is a 6 day leg of about 132 km from Kariba to Mana Pools on our Fisheagle Safari

  • Or paddle the whole stretch on the Zambezi Classic on a 10 day trip from Kariba to Kanyemba

The best time of year on the lower Zambezi is during the dry season from May to October.

  • For game, the best is in the really hot months of October and November - temperatures however can be extremely uncomfortable once they hit 40 degrees plus (most of the two suicide months). The rains generally start from mid November to the end of March. During this period the Tiger fish on the river are biting well, but canoeing can get wet, the game tends to disperse into the mountains for extra food and the roads become a challenge.

  • The quietest (tourist wise) months are February, March, May, June and November.

  • The peak period of July, August and September should be booked well in advance.

  • Price note: National Parks charge per person rates of US$15 entry fee plus US$5 per night, payable in cash on entry.  These fees are not included in the safari rates and are subject to change without notice.
